This post is all about an easy and functional weekly cleaning schedule for busy people.
This doesn’t only apply to people with hectic work schedules; it’s also perfect for full-time students and full-time parents!
Everyone struggles to balance a busy life while maintaining a clean space/house. We all value time most because it’s something we cannot get back once it passes. So, to save time and mental energy, you’ll need a well-structured weekly cleaning schedule.
Why a weekly cleaning schedule works?
Some people might not be used to schedules. You wonder why a weekly cleaning schedule is needed. After all, you clean whenever you notice something dirty, right?
While that can make a good habit, it’s not always a possible thing for everyone.
And let’s be honest – not everybody has hours to spend cleaning. The secret is making a simple system that molds perfectly with your life and not the other way around.
Having a schedule helps you prevent a buildup of tasks. You’ll be capable of keeping consistent cleanliness throughout the whole place. And the key to everything is to do daily chunks of cleaning that only take 10 minutes at the most.
1. Make your bed
Making your bed every morning right after you get up gives you a good start of the day. Mentally, you’ll feel more productive and will give you a sense of accomplishment.
2. Quick one-minute floor sweep in all rooms
It doesn’t have to be perfect. It just needs to remove enough dust from the floor to keep it tidy. I certainly don’t like getting dust underneath my foot when I don’t wear slippers.
3. Pick up clutter
I like to keep my workspace without too much stuff on it. We occasionally may put some clothes or stationery stuff on our workspaces during the day – especially when we are in a hurry – so it’s important to remember to pick up the clutter.
And not just the workspace but everywhere: dirty clothes, hang any jacket or coat left on chairs (because I do leave them there most of the time), pick up toys and organise them (if you’re a parent or have a pet).
4. Clean down kitchen counters
The kitchen must always be clean. And it doesn’t even take that long; the 60 seconds you spend wiping down your counters can prevent buildup and eliminate bacteria.
5. Quick wipe-down of bathroom surfaces
Bathroom surfaces tend to get very humid during the day, so it’s best to clean them every day. This will, most importantly, avoid mold and mildew buildup.
The Perfect 7-Day Cleaning Routine
1. Monday: Bathroom Blitz
So, where do we start? First of all, I started with a deep clean of the bathroom on Monday on the schedule for the simple reason that it’s the place in the house where it gets humid the most. AND I personally think that a dirty bathroom automatically means a dirty house.
2. Tuesday: Kitchen Deep-Clean
Then, on Tuesday, it’s kitchen cleaning day. The main cleaning tasks are cleaning the stovetop, counters, and sink, as well as organizing and taking out trash. You’ll prevent bacterial growth, minimise food contamination risks—which is the whole purpose of maintaining a clean kitchen—and extend the life of your appliances and surfaces.
3. Wednesday: Dusting & Surfaces
Wednesday is really simple; it’s all about dusting and wiping surfaces. BUT it really depends on how big your house is; the more stuff you have, like mirrors, electronics, windows and furnishings, the more stuff you have to clean.
4. Thursday: Floor Focus
Thursday, also very simple. And much faster than dusting and wiping everything you have in the house. Be sure to shrug any rugs you have, because so much gets on those things and we don’t even see it.
5. Friday: Laundry Day
There is nothing better than having clean bed sheets and clothes.
And it isn’t just about that. It’s also about saving time and always being prepared with fresh, ready-to-wear outfits. And not just outfits but also couch covers and towels.
6. Saturday: Quick Declutter/Organize
On Saturday, it’s all about organizing your house by picking up clutter and general cleaning up any mess that you may have left anywhere around the house.
This includes bags and purses, throwing away trash and also planning next week’s schedule.
7. Sunday: Rest & Prep
Aaaaaand Sunday it’s rest day. Just do some light maintenance and be sure to prep whatever you will need for next week’s cleaning schedule, like cleaning supplies.
